2 overhead AKG P170s and an Audix D6 on the kick. That is all I used and I like it! This track featured the great Danny Gottlieb on drums, Lyle Mays piano, Mark Eagan on bass, Pat guitar. Great tune from 1977/78. Please let me know what you think on the mix and sound.

This is a song by Billy Joel done by Garth Brooks. It was a huge hit for Garth. I invited my good friend Earl "The Hammer" Bennett to cover the Bill Joel version since he is so good with Billy's tunes and I would do the Garth version to be released on same day for the drumming community to A-B them! How cool! Enjoy and do check out Earl's version on You Tube. I know I will!

Hang with me guys. This is different. A little Thai to start with. Not long. You will love this song. Very melodic and it ROCKS! From Thailand's best, Maew Chirasak and his big brother Lek Tbone on drums. I saw and met them both at a concert in around 2002. Great musicians!

Here is one that features my first vocals, bongo and drums. I'm a bit pitchy, but oh well as good as most pop stars when they don't use autotune. It also features my beautiful bride in her wedding dress dancing with me earlier this month. 31 years strong, thanks be to God. This tasty track featured Andy Newmark on drums. My Little Girl - Tim McGraw drum cover by: Jim Huwe
Hi, great video. I wanted to ask what sort of lacquer you used and if you baked the trombone bell afterwards to harden the lacquer finish so it doesn't come off. The inside of the bell on my Eb tuba is raw brass, I removed the lacquer years ago because it was badly damaged. I did try re lacquering it but as I wasn't able to bake it afterwards it didn't last long. Thanks.
I used Nikolas 2105 air-dry. I also use Egyptian if I do a full horn. Both nitrocellulose lacquers airdry. I get too many compliments on how much more open horns seem to play with nitro. There are so many reasons that I am not interested in baked finishes. I used to spay them back in the 80's at a different shop I was in. Never cared for how they flowed out. All this said, overly thinned nitro or the canned stuff will not last real long. 50/50 or 60/40 lacquer to thinner works well with good longevity. It does darken with age. I have examples that have held up so well for 15 to 25 years. I have also hsd horns that I sent out for 2 part baked that have not weathered all that well for the hype. All finishes are temporary in nature. Silver plate and nickel plate are among the most long-lasting and least temporary. All lacquers are more subject to elements like sweat, salts, low and high ph. But lacquers are oh so pretty.
@@jimflys2 thanks, that's useful information 👍
Love it! Do you think you could “Cannonball” by Weather Report?
Perfect performance my friend, I remember in my parents house to see Carlos in the Paiste catalogue, great great drummer, much love from Spain♥️♥️♥️
Thank you so much for listening and taking the time to comment. I really appreciate it. I have done many Carlos Vega drum covers. I saw him one time with James Taylor! WOW!
Resist the comparison but just saw you referenced on Earl's cover. PMG is my all-time GOAT band and what an excellent and smooth groove through and through on this one! Well played and the mix is stunning - More Pat and maybe with the late, great Lyle Mays!?
Yes. EARL and I are good friends. I may do another Pat tune. Met Lyle some 30 years ago. Worked on his trumpet. Yes, trumpet, not piano! LOL! Also did one lesson with Wertico at his place in Skokie, IL.
@jimflys2 Lyle is one of those very special musicians for me and he and Pat together were such a force. What an awesome privilege Jim! Saw Pat one night in Georgetown and tried to buy him a 🍺
@@thedrumdon2485cool. D.C. right?
Danny Gottlieb, so underrated IMO. Love the unorthodox setup! Nice and smooth, man! Sounds great for 3 mics!
Thanks KMK! I agree with you about DG. I am doing this tom thing because I want to see how it works. Kenny did it back in the day and Bernard as well. Not sure if it was so that there was less snare to small tom sympathetic buzz or if for sticking on how they played fills or if they preferred the larger tom on most fills, but had the smaller one to use for orchestration when it called for it. I have no idea. I kind of like it depending on the type of song. For jazz, I think I would be better of in the trad set up. For rock fills that don't use the typical high to low drop, it is kind of cook. Think RLRL and it is pretty ergonomic. Small, Med, Floor, Floor.
Old Imperialstars are some of my favorite drums... so good to see folks breathing new life into them and saving them from a dumpster somewhere. Nice Fibrestar snare too!! Well done! What is the brand of inhibited water meter cleaner you use? I'd like to try that on a few things I have needing similar cleaning. Thanks!!
Share Chemical company. Milwaukee. Dilute, do not use full strength. Dilute to start with about 10 to 20% and the rest water. Don't let it touch aluminum or cast parts that have any aluminum exposed like tapped holds that are threaded. Have a soda water neutralizing bath at the ready.
This guy Knows how to do everything ! Wrap drums, repair and maintain drums and hardware, play drums excellently in probably every style of music, and record and make videos, that's pretty awesome !
Thanks so much. Yes, my drum covers are listed by category, so whatever you like. Some styles I regularly play live, I do not do much with covers. More to come, my friend!
Thank you for bringing this topic up brother ! I recently discovered on UA-cam Duffy as a band leader in a small group swinging his butt off at a live outdoor gig I think in Florida? And he takes a solo of scatting like a true be-bop horn player with tons of syncopation in his voice while he's driving the band hard on the drum kit with elegance and grace. He was like Mount Fuji, unmovable. The coordination needed to pull off singing like that while playing drums so steadily was unbelievable. His scat singing was not amateur. He had monstrous coordination to pull that off! Rest in peace Duffy you're an amazing force of nature.
Love that story, Kent! Yeah, super swinging, hard driving, happy and joyful. Dang!
Nice job. Thank you for sharing. Quick question if you see the comment, what are you using g for gold lacquer? Thanks
I used Ferree's gold dye added to the lacquer at an amount, that after spaying some test pieces, seemed to be the color I wanted. Google Ferree's Tolls Inc....... X82A 4 oz. (118 ml) Perma-Laq Dye
Super, thank you!
This Pat Metheny “White” album is so important to me and more importantly how Danny Gotlieb played this drum part. You need to respect this and play it like the original. I understand playing your version - but not nearly as good as the original recorded. However I will say your overall kit sound is nice.
If I could play it as good as the original, I'd be getting calls from A list jazz cats and probably not do drum covers. None the less, I do appreciate your comment, and yes, this album is a special one for me, too.
After listening numerous times to the original and then jimflys2 cover, he captured all the nuances of Gottlieb's playing and put it all in the pocket. I like as well, if not better. Sorry, I think you're blowing a lot of "hot air!"
Love this!
Well thanks for watching, bird. I think I know you :)
@jimflys2 ha! You're in NY?
What a smooth way to start the week! Every part of your kit is in balance, and your playing is perfection! 🎵
Thanks Randy. Yes, a great mellow song, but some great energy too. I used just overhead mics and a kick mic on this one. Kind of like the minimal approach.
Excellent song choice Jim! Great drumming my friend! You really nailed the ending too! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻😎

Thanks Randy. Working on some others in the hopper. Very busy in the shop, so less evening time and less output this summer.
I hope this isn’t the beginning of a drum-off war between you two good friends, or maybe that is a cool idea. It was fun listening to how the two of you approached the drumming on this great song. One thing stands out so plain and clear, and that is the wonderful sounds the two of you pull from those drum sets. I feel so fortunate to have the two of you as my friends.❤️🙏👏❤️🙏👏❤️
Thanks Greg, so much! It's all about being brothers and supporting each other. For me and Earl, we have formed a good friendship and have a ton in common and talk on the phone a fair bit. I just love the Garth version of this song. Then I found out it was a Billy Joel song. Then one day, for the lack of inspiration on what to play next, it hit me. Have Earl do the Billy version and I will do the version I first heard. He was on board with it and we set forth. If you have any ideas for us, I am sure we can run it by each other. No double drumming on Freebird. Well, maybe.................
Great song, great cover dude!!!

Jim, I have take my old Camco pedal apart! I wish you showed that process! But great video … I just got two good takes of “the song”! 😉😉😉
I have the Tama version of this too. I will do a disassembly video for you and explain it as I go. It would be a good offering for others too. It should be the same process for you, since Camco did license Tama and DW to start their productions of this. Or something like that. It is a history lesson in itself.
Mr.jimflys2, once again your patience and perseverance pays off for you. I have messed with my pedal a bit, but I am afraid to take it too much apart. I keep thinking that springs are going to go flying, parts will get lost, and I will be stuck without a pedal. That’s about the way most of my fix-it jobs go. Anyway, nice video presentation, and I will be waiting patiently for my notification bell to chime telling me you have something new to share with me. Take care, my friend.❤️🙏❤️🙏❤️
Thanks, Greg. Hope to get more stuff out soon.

The double bass drum work is too smooth on Lars.
Jim you are a true artisan. Absolutely, fantastic work. I saved a Yamaha YSL 354 from a pawn shop starting to rust a little. I paid to have the slide reworked so it was playable again. Is it worth getting it restored. No dents but a little pitting. I did get it for pennies on the dollar.

The Texas Shuffle. I love it, but I hate it because I can't play it. No matter how hard I try, my left hand says, nope! Awesome cover brother!!! And you're playing it matched. Just showing off!
Lol. I practice both grips. Usually using it more for rock...matched. More comfortable playing jazz with trad. But I will switch hit all the time.
